ACS Makes it 10 Wins in 2010 at the Provincial Mock Trial Competition

On April 14, the Assumption College School Mock Trial team travelled to Toronto to compete in the OBA’s Annual Provincial Mock Trial Competition. Students are presented with a fact sheet based on different witness testimony. The students must then build a case using the same information for both the Crown and the Defence. When trial time comes around, the teams are unaware of what side they will be playing until a few minutes before the trial when the decision is made with a simple coin toss. The competition is a single elimination tournament which means that if a team loses, that team is out.
At 1:00 that afternoon, the team had its first match as the Crown against TanenbaumCHAT from Vaughn. In a hard fought battle, Assumption prevailed and were able to move on to the next round. The competition continued the next day with another trial taking place at 11:00 am. Assumption won the coin toss and chose to play the side of the Defence as they took to the courtroom against Lasalle Secondary School from Sudbury. Another tough battle was fought in the courtroom and another victory was claimed by the Lions. The third and final trial was held at 2:00 pm the same day against Humberside Collegiate from Toronto. The Lions once again represented the Crown and faced their toughest competition yet. The trial ended in an absolute nail biter with the winner unannounced until the Law Day banquet later that evening. It was not until then that Assumption was officially named the 2010 OBA Provincial Mock Trial Champions.
A big congratulations goes out to the team for their significant achievement and for their hard work; they made Assumption very proud. Team lawyers consisted of Christopher Radojewski, Nicole Tuczynski, Alexander Young and Geoffrey Ankumah. The team’s two witnesses were played by Heather Dennis and Mathew Demeulenaere and the student coach was Cassidy Rathwell. A special recognition goes out to staff coaches Ms. Carissa Weiler and Mrs. Jennifer Tunnicliffe. Special thanks also go to Ms. Gina Locey and Mr. Dave Allen for their dramatic assistance. Also a big Lion roar goes out to local lawyers Mr. Dennis Touesnard and Mr. George Orsini whose guidance and advice was a critical asset to the victory. Assumption has captured its tenth Provincial Mock Trial victory in the years this program has existed, something no other school in the province has come close to achieving. The Assumption Lions look forward to next year and defending their provincial title in the courtroom.
