Assumption’s Olympic Spirit – Torch Bearer Alex Young
Assumption’s Olympic Spirit – Torch Bearer Alex Young
The Assumption College School community had the Olympic spirit brought to them through an exclusive interview on Assumption Television (ATV) with ACS Grade 12 student Alex Young. Wearing his official Olympic Torch Bearer outfit, Alex was interviewed by ATV community journalist Kristine Purdy on Friday, February 26th during the broadcast of the daily morning announcements to all classrooms within the Assumption community.
Alex was selected to participate, as a torch-bearer on the cross-Canada Olympic Torch Relay, after applying through an application process that consisted of a written essay and reference letters. Alex felt extremely honoured when he was chosen to represent his Native Métis culture by carrying the Olympic torch.
Overwhelmed with excitement on his Olympic journey, Alex savoured his moment in time while carrying the Olympic torch in Midland, Ontario, a small northern town situated on the southern shores of Georgian Bay. This location was selected because of its large Métis community.
“It was a once in a lifetime experience,” Alex said, knowing that he had played a significant role in representing his Native heritage, his culture, and all Canadians in carrying the torch towards the official lighting of the Olympic Cauldron at the opening ceremonies in Vancouver, British Columbia.
The ATV technical team concluded their broadcast by proudly honouring our Olympic spirit and Canadian patriotism by having the whole school community stand for the playing of O Canada, our national anthem sung by Canadian artist Nikki Yanofsky to open the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. A video collage of our Canadian Olympic athletes, and some special Olympic moments representing proud and cherished memories for all, was broadcast during our anthem. This was followed by the playing of I Believe, the CTV Anthem for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games, sung by Nikki Yanofsky.
Following the morning broadcast Alex generously offered his torch to the ATV technical crew to take pictures of each other holding his Olympic torch. “What a great opportunity,” ATV technical directors remarked, for our school community to be able to participate in such a spirited Olympic moment and in having Alex’s compelling Olympic message brought to our school community.
