ASSUMPTION LOVES NEW YORK

ASSUMPTION LOVES NEW YORK

Last month Assumption College sent not one, but two contingents to New York City as both Music Department and Canadian and World Studies students took in the sights and sounds of historic Manhattan.

On April 30th music students set out on a journey to the city that never sleeps. After a long bus ride, the students were eager to learn about The Big Apple.

On the first night, they toured the famous building ‘Top of The Rock’, and enjoyed the beautiful scenery. Throughout the 3 days they traveled to many famous buildings.

The place that struck everyone with the most impact was Radio City Music Hall. To walk through this historic facility was amazing to a lot of the students. Many famous bands and singers performed on that very stage, and for the Assumption students, it was a spectacular sight. On the second night of their trip, students got to eat dinner at a live jazz restaurant. Experiencing live jazz is very different then a recorded piece of work. It sounds so amazing to be able to hear it and see it right in front of you. On their free time, students also encountered many guitar players on the streets, including the famous guitarist ‘The Naked Cowboy’. To end their trip students traveled to The Palace Theatre to enjoy the musical “West Side Story”.

Following tour guides around, and watching musicals weren’t the only musical activities for these students. On the bus and even on the streets of New York City, the enthusiastic students burst into song and even dance. There was never a dull moment. They even tapped their feet to the honks of horns and sounds of sirens. This trip truly made an impact on their musical creativity. It was a great trip, with many musical memories!

Likewise, the Senior History and Political Science classes from ACS made their way to New York on the same day. Though they saw New York from a little bit of a different perspective, they still enjoyed many of the same wonderful sights that draw tourists from around the globe. The History students visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Blue Man Group, the United Nations and Ellis Island. Many of the history students could really connect with the trip to Ellis Island, including a close-up view of the Statue of Liberty, the iconic symbol of hope and the American dream.

It was an amazing experience for all the students and many came away with an appreciation for New York’s important role as a major commercial, financial and cultural centre of both the United States and the world.
