Cosmetology Lab

Cosmetology Lab

Two years ago, another floor was added onto Assumption College School, which provided more opportunities for the students at the school. With this new floor brought the new cosmetology lab, adding hairstyling and aesthetics to the classes.

Mrs. P. Turvey is the talented teacher of this course. Mrs. Turvey has been a hairstylist since 1982, and has been teaching since 2002. When asked about the course, Mrs. Turvey had this to say “The course allows the students to experiment with tools of the trade and to make an informed decision of whether this is something they would choose as a career or not.” This statement could not be more true.

The course is offered to senior students, grades 11 and 12. Every year, there is approximately 100 grade 11 students in the course, and 40 grade 12 students. Out of these

students, Mrs. Turvey notes that around 12-18 students aspire to get into hairstyling and aesthetics. The courses are set up perfectly for those few students.

The textbook that is used by both grades in the course is the same book that is used for the hairstyling and aesthetics exam, which consists of 300 multiple choice questions pulled directly from the book. The course is government licensed and is set to the standards of the government. The entire class is practical, where the students are on their feet and practicing the skills and techniques necessary for this trade. This is where there can really feel out whether they are suited for this career or not.

The course is divided into many different topics. The first, which both grades focus on, is safety. The students are dealing with many different chemicals and hot objects, and learning the safety is very important. In the grade 11 course, there is a wide range of topics, from shampooing, hairstyling, and waxing to makeup and manicures. The grade 12 course gets more fun and specific by offering advanced hairstyling, cutting, perming and colouring, special effects makeup and management skills, for those students interested in opening their own salon. The course really helps the students to develop the basic skills and knowledge that they will be able to carry on throughout their career.

However, the course does not allow the students to bank in hours towards their apprenticeship. The only in school program that would help the students with that goal is the OYAP (Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program) where the students get to experience the real job environment. Many of the students in the hairstyling and aesthetics course take advantage of this opportunity, and actually give them a head start when they are finished school.

The students in the hairstyling and aesthetics course are working very hard towards their goals in achieving greatness, and the cosmetology lab really gives them the tools necessary to help them get there. Everyone at Assumption is very proud of our lions and hope that the students reach for their dreams and take advantage of all the opportunities that are given to them.
