Education Week Breakfast of Champions
Education Week Breakfast of Champions

It has become a tradition at Assumption College School that, during Catholic Education Week, in the early morning hours, a group of students and their parents enjoy a breakfast together and hear the stories of how their children have stood out during the past school year.
Usually it’s not their prowess on the athletic fields, or their highest standings academically in their classes that have earned this recognition, although there are athletes and academics in the group. Each student beingrecognized has a unique story -- one that ‘set them apart’ among others -- and a story which a nominating teacher believed should be told, to them, to their parents, and to the others who shared this special, early morning event with them.
So how should I describe the students who are honoured during Breakfast of Champions?
Let’s look at some of the stories:
• One student volunteers his time as a guide-runner for a visually impaired student.
• One student discovered a love for literature, and became a voracious reader.
• One student thought first of the children whose sleep was disrupted by fire alarms, who kept them warm and safe and unafraid.
• Several overcame personal adversity by making positive changes in their lives.
• One spearheaded the classroom efforts to feed and clothe the hungry during our Lenten campaign.
• One girl brought her dynamite smile to a class that set the tone for positive teaching and learning.
When each story is so unique, how can I possibly describe what sets these students apart, and compelled a nominating teacher to want them recognized?
The bottom line for me is that these are the students who ‘walk the talk’ of our school’s Mission Statement. We recite it every Monday -- and the champions that are celebrated at this event prove that these are not just words, but actions that we are called as members of the Lions’ Den to do! For those of us who had the pleasure of attending Breakfast of Champions, it was inspiring to see these fabulous students being recognized, having their stories be told, and witnessing the pride on their parents’ faces!
Congratulations to the fifty-six newest ‘champions’ in the Lions’ Den! You make us very, very proud!
