First Musical - Godspell
First Musical - Godspell
A historic event will take place at Assumption College at the end of March. We are proudly presenting our very first musical ever, Godspell, on our own stage!
Godspell is a musical comedy based on the gospel of St. Matthew. (Yes, we said “comedy”). It continues to enjoy commercial and critical success on and off Broadway. Even though the play was originally written for only 8 actors, Assumption’s version will employ over 40 actors, musicians and dancers. The music is awesome and the choreography is unforgettable! You won’t want to miss it!
Shows will take place at 7pm on March 27, 28 & 29, and at 2pm on Sunday, March 30. Tickets are $15 each ($10 for students and seniors), and will be available at the school. Call Ms. Henry at extension 311 for more information
We are also holding a special event for the Sunday show. Mass will be celebrated at noon, a fabulous brunch will be served by the Hungry Lion at 1pm, with our final show following at 2pm. Brunch is an extra $10 and seating is limited. You do not need to attend the brunch to attend the show. We are already working hard rehearsing! We promise that you will not be disappointed (unless you miss it)!
As the buzz of a great theatrical production spreads around the community, the opening of curtains is drawing near on Assumption College School’s newest endeavor- a full scale production of the musical “Godspell”.
The entire show is being supported by a group of over a hundred people, from lighting and sound production to hair and makeup, and everyone in between. As a script that originally was written for ten characters, the number of people involved, including a cast of over forty people is absolutely astounding. An incredible amount of work on all parts was put forth to re-work the script to fit all students wishing to be a part of the production. With directors Dave Allen, Naomi O’Neill and Nicole Burroughs, to encourage and spark energy, the enthusiasm of the entire team is astounding. “We really come together as an energetic group,” says cast member Caitlyn Hanley, “It’s a great experience”.
Each rehearsal is introduced with a prayer led by a different participant or leader and on special occasion, head of the school’s religion department, Father Phil Reilly. Immediately a sense of connection and purpose is established. “The rehearsal process is an opportunity for everyone to deepen their faith. We are on a spiritual journey,” states director Dave Allen.
After all the rehearsals, dating back to the first meeting in June of 2007, what is to be said about the show? Superb choreography thanks to Nicole Burroughs, a breath taking and effective set led by Darlyn Burroughs, a variety of music directed by Naomi O’Neill, and portrayal of the Gospel of Matthew by a talented group of young teenagers leads to an astounding production that, as a report from Allen, causes “genuine goose bumps.” As the second musical production from Assumption College, the piece is sure to go down as a highlight of what the school has brought to the surrounding community.
To say all this, however, is to say the least. As a participant in the production, it is an experience like no other. Directors alike agree it is one of the highlights of their careers. It is a collaboration to express the deepest faith, and love of drama that exists within all those involved. It is the message that falls on good soil, which grows and blooms deep within us all. It has brought people together, and has given a memory that will last a lifetime. To see and share this message is such a wonderful experience. So, share the memory, it is guaranteed that it will not be a disappointment.
