Haiti Fundraising Blitz

Haiti Fundraising Blitz

Students, Others Help Victims
HAITI EARTHQUAKE

Assumption College students and staff collected $7,500 in two hours on Tuesday morning for disaster relief in Haiti.

Students "passed the hat for Haiti" in each classroom and then, dressed in giant T-shirts worn over winter coats and carrying Help us Help Haiti placards, they hit the parking lot and nearby retail plazas where they solicited donations from the public, said school chaplain Wayne Lachapelle.

The fundraising blitz took place between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m.

The money will be donated to the Canadian Red Cross and World Vision and will be matched by government, Lachapelle said.

"I'm proud and humbled" by the students' efforts, he said.

Seven of Assumption College's feeder elementary schools are also contributing to the cause.

Meanwhile, Travelonly, of Brantford, is donating $1,000 to Haitian disaster relief.

Patrick Luciani, the firm's chairman, is also starting a campaign to solicit contributions from Travelonly's more than 500 associates and affiliates across Canada to provide further humanitarian relief.

"Haiti needs our immediate help to provide food, water and medical attention to those in need," he said in a news release.

Travelonly is a member of travel distribution network Transat Distribution Canada.

Luciani praised Transat's promise to match donations made by its employees and franchisees in addition to its contribution of $50,000. He urged other members of Canada's travel community to join Travelonly in following Transat's humanitarian lead.

And the city is officially planning to express its concerns and send relief money to earthquake victims.

On Monday, council is expected to pass a resolution which would both extend the city's heartfelt condolences to victims and their families, while also donating $1,000 to the Canadian Red Cross.

The city launched its Red Cross fundraising campaign this past Monday to assist families and rebuild homes and cultural landmarks in Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital.
