Junior Girls’ Basketball Wins C.W.O.S.S.A.
On Friday November 20th and Saturday November 21st, the Junior Girls’ Basketball team travelled to Waterloo to compete in the C.W.O.S.S.A. ‘AAAA’ tournament. Having earned a berth from their second place finish in the city, the Lions took on the largest and quickest teams in the region.
The Lions took on Bluevale Collegiate in the first round of play. Despite B.C.I.’s homecourt advantage, the Lions took the win by double digits.
Despite an early start time, and being down one coach, the Lions then took on the second place team in the opposite pool—Waterloo Collegiate Institute—in Saturday morning’s semi-final action. In true Lion fashion, the players rallied together and turned on the full court pressure. Scoring was shared by all, but Sarah Harris led the team with sixteen points, followed by Jerika Baldin with eleven. The Lions fought hard to the final buzzer, securing the 38-29 win, and a place in Saturday night’s Final.
At six o’clock, the Lions took to the court to take on the St. Mary’s Eagles from Kitchener. Although the Lions were unable to shut down the Eagles’ point guard, Kaitlyn Schenk who netted thirty-five points alone, the team pulled together and took the gold with a 52-47 final score. Leading the Lions’ scoring were Emily Gill and Abby Heron with sixteen points a piece.
The Lady Lions were presented with gold medals and a large C.W.O.S.S.A. plaque that will be proudly displayed in the school.
The entire school community would like to congratulate the girls on an amazing season and for representing Assumption College School with such pride. Coaches Bourne, Beaumont, and Birka are delighted to have had the chance to work with you this season, and they look forward to watching you all play in the future.
Go Lions! Way to bring home the Gold! You are all truly inspiring!
