Take Our Kids to Work
Take Our Kids to Work
“TAKE OUR KIDS TO WORK”
NOVEMBER 3, 2004
On Wednesday November 3, 2004 we will be participating once again in a Canada-wide initiative to have grade 9 student spend one day at work with a parent, friend, relative, or other caring adult.
This Canada-wide initiative will involve over 400 000 grade 9 students in the 2004/2005 school year. All Assumption College grade 9 students will have the opportunity to participate in this experience.
For additional information on the issue, please call Peter Polillo in our Cooperative Education Office, at (519) 751-2030 ext. 232.
As Director of Education for the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board, I thank staff, parents, students and members of the business community for their support of “Take Our Kids to Work” Day. Now a province-wide, annual event, this exciting concept is an important first step in Grade 9 students’ career awareness and their ultimate ability to make choices and decisions during high school about their future careers and directions.
WHAT ABOUT THE QUESTION OF LIABILITY INSURANCE?
As members of the Ontario School Board’s Insurance Exchange (OSBIE), the Board makes the following statement on behalf of our secondary schools, which we trust will clarify this issue for you:
As an important link between students and the world beyond, the concept of “Take Our Kids to Work” is fully sanctioned and supported by secondary schools in our jurisdiction.
Secondary schools have permission forms signed by parents or guardians on file for all students participating in “Take Our Kids to Work”. In a majority of cases, the students will be under the direct supervision of their parents or guardians during their work day.
Students out of school for “Take our Kids to Work” are covered under the Board’s liability insurance for the duration of the event. The student and the employer are protected in the event either or both of them are named in a civil action arising out of the negligence of the student while on the work program; coverage does not extend to protect employer and other employees for negligence arising out of their actions.
The liability coverage extends to protect the student in the event that damage is caused accidentally by the student to the employer’s property while it is in the student’s care, custody or control.
Students are not covered under the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act. We suggest that you also check your own insurance policy, which likely includes coverage for guests or visitors to your place of business.
If you still have any questions, please contact Mr. Dante Dalia at 751-2030, Extension 246 for further information.
