Take Our Kids to Work Day / 2007-2008
Every year on November 7th, Grade 9 students at Assumption College School in Brantford are invited to participate in the National event called Take Our Kids to Work Day. Grade 9 students across the country sign up to go to work with their parent, aunt, uncle or even a friend’s parent. They are able to see what happens everyday in a workplace environment. Students are able to experience life outside of high school. The workplaces that the students visit can range anywhere from farms to hospitals and offices.
Haley Zettler was fortunate enough to get to go to the Brantford Central Station Fire Hall with her dad Darren Zettler. The first order of business for Haley was to attend City Hall for a safety presentation at 8:30am. Haley and all the other Grade 9 students at Assumption attended a safety presentation at the school on Tuesday, the day before heading out to work with their parents. The one that Haley attended had approximately 25 students that were going to municipally – operated workplaces such as the police station or fire hall for the day. Haley’s dad Darren is a Fire Prevention Officer. He does inspections on buildings and houses to make sure they are safe. Haley and Darren were planning to do some building inspections today. Haley even got to look at some site plans.
Another grade 9 student named Jacqueline Thompson was able to go to work with her mom Karen Thompson at The Williamson Group. The Williamson Group is dedicated to selling life insurance, mutual funds and even pension plans to companies. Karen deals specifically with group pension plans. When asked if this was a job she would like to do when she is older, Jacqueline said, “It’s not something for me, but there are a lot of really nice people.” Jacqueline was helping her mom type up amendments and other insurance related activities. Jacqueline claims that the environment at the Williamson Group was much different than the environment at school. “No jeans,” said Jacqueline. The Williamson Group is running a competitive Food Drive for the Food Bank in conjunction with the United Way Drive. The staff members are separated into 5 groups, mainly according to departments. Each week a different group must bring in loads of food. Karen’s group has called themselves the “Fill-More Girls,” a name closely related to the popular TV show Gilmore Girls.
National Take Our Kids to Work Day has been going on since 1994. All students who are going into Grade 9 next year are highly encouraged to participate in this amazing eventful day. It gives students a look as to what their parents or guardians go through everyday. Students will finally have the answers to all their questions, including the ever famous, “Mom, Dad...Why are you so tired???” They will finally understand why!
